The panoramic landscapes and the culture of Masai Mara is a true delight to travelers, photographers and designers alike. At Beyond Dreams, designer duo Akshay and Avani Khurana explored this captivating land and strived to bring this authentic African charm into their new collection ‘Kuruka’.
Extolling the rich heritage and culture of the land, the designers manifested their memories into this bespoke furniture collection. Their inspiration was translated into an exquisite earthy color palette paired with materials like concrete and brass.
Portraying a confluence of contemporary designs with the culture of Masai people, the collection rendered clean lines and rounded curves with abstract Masai cultural motifs inspired from their ensembles, traditional embroidery, and jewelry.
The collection features lounge chairs and sofas with simple curved lines and wood polishes while a simple dining console is elevated with culturally-inspired detailing. The stunning four-legged side table or the abstractly rounded pouf brings a sophisticated presence in the house. The fluidity of thinking and designing of the studio all combine to represent the Masai culture in the most exquisite style.
Purging the traditional naming conventions, the designers emphasize an unconventional approach towards the collection and design as a whole. Nameless yet, every piece of the collection has its own story which can be reinterpreted with a new vibe. The American walnut open-grain finish dining chairs add a sense of character to living spaces, while the rounded side table could be reimagined as a footboard while still retaining the essence of the design. The designs culminate in a unique juxtaposition of subtle shades of brown and green and refined texture that the designers want their customers to admire.
“Masai Mara has been a childhood dream destination for us. We were inspired by the raw beauty, the brutalist nature and vibrant culture of this African gem, and it has always held a special place in our hearts. Each piece of our Kuruka collection is crafted with spontaneity and eccentric forms, showcasing the beautiful textures and patterns that are found in traditional tribal designs from the region,” says Mr. Khurana of Beyond Dreams.
