July 31, 2019: Gaurav Gupta who is a leading beacon of dramatic, cultural shift in the way the modern Indian bride and groom wear couture, celebrates the brand’s 15th year with his new couture collection “Undercurrent”. The collection was showcased at FDCI India Couture Week, for which Gaurav has drawn inspiration from the fierce, rhythmic, concentric waves of the ocean. With an avant-garde lens, the collection defines sculpting as a science of new couture.
Epitomizing Mr. Gupta’s vision of the glocal bride, a charismatic, graceful yet playful and well-travelled intellectual who wants to have fun, was global influencer and founder of Post for Change, Diipa Khosla. She was seen in an unending ethereal lehenga, layered in ombre hues of champagne, which was handcrafted with 150 meters of organza and finely embroidered with pearls. The perfect accent for this was a special Liberation necklace, designed by Mr. Gupta in the shape of wings interwoven together, stylized to project the movement of a bird gracefully taking flight. Each piece of this necklace was set under a microscope, a delicate combination of rose cut and full cut diamonds – 8000 pieces in all, created over eight months. The highlight of this Gaurav Gupta construction is that every feather is scooped from the backside to keep the necklace light on the wearer.
A vision in green-gray, actor Diana Penty concluded the show in the night’s highlight piece, a sculpted mermaid gown, in light organza, layered in the brand’s indigenous techniques. Japanese iridescent bugle beads, placed all over her look, lent an electric yet feminine glitter to her look. This was accessorized with statement ear cuffs from Gaurav Gupta Occasions Fine Jewelry, sculpting the ear with three exquisitely woven and specially shaped diamonds.
The outfits, that instill a feeling of movement and depth of layers, fantasy and dimension are perfectly molded to flatter and fit the body well in shades of violet and lava red. The collection also boasts of bold ivory whites and ecru which the modern bride embraces as she accents it with Gaurav Gupta Occasions Fine Jewelry.
In this collection, Gaurav adds a dramatic flamboyance to his menswear. The GG groom in all his dapperness, is a true embodiment of a Centaur. With futuristic embellished tuxedos, classic embroidered bandhgalas and sherwanis in aureate jacquards, smooth velvets and brilliant suiting make a confident statement. The colors are kept classic in monochromatic blacks, whites, ivory and midnight blues.
