Depicting a vibrant landscape full of art and unique motifs, designers Neelanjan Ghosh and Kanika Sachdev showed their collection called Archipelago at Lakme Fashion Week. Their label, Jajaabor, took inspiration from the designers’ travels to Indonesia and set forth an exquisite collection that explores the unique biodiversity of the place.
Archipelago means a group of small islands that come together to form a whole, and as the title suggests, the collection seeks to bring the rich cultural diversity and ever-changing landscape of the Indonesian islands through an eclectic mix of textures, embroideries and prints on contemporary silhouettes.
The designers were fascinated with the visually arresting landscapes of Indonesia, the untouched marine biosphere of Nusa Tenggara, and the unity of people in this multicultural land.
The inspiration for the reactive prints came from the beautiful traditional coastal batiks by Dutch textile artist Eliza Charlotte van Zuylen and the famous “Wayang Kulit” shadow puppetry’s rendition of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
The embroideries and textures inspired by rich biodiversity of Indonesia were revived in chanderi silk, organza, cotton and net on contemporary silhouettes.
Showstoppers included a beautiful textured, hand-embroidered tuille shift dress with a bomber jacket, and a hand embroidered jacket with a lapel with 3-D clownfish sleeves and an asymmetric tuille skirt.
This astounding line of ensembles, which comes in a kaleidoscopic range of shades, will be available at their official website and flagship store in New Delhi.
