Kim Kardashian acquires one of Princess Diana’s favoured jewels – the Attallah Cross – for $197,453

Sotheby’s auctioned the amethyst laden Attallah Cross at more than double its pre-auction estimate.

Princess Diana was forever known for her iconic fashion style, and she had a particular fondness for the Attallah Cross, a priceless pendant created by jeweller Garrard in the 1920s.

Amethyst Attallah cross

The fleuree style pendant used to be owned by late Naim Attallah, the former group chief executive of Asprey & Garrard. Due to her friendship with Mr. Attallah, Princess Diana would often take the Attallah Cross on loan to wear at several events, mostly private. The Princess of Wales wore the stunning jewel, with a Catherine Walker dress, to a charity gala in support of Birthright, a charity working towards the protection of human rights during pregnancy and childbirth, in October 1987.

The gorgeous piece represented the unique and bold jewellery choice of Princess Diana. It is understood that the cross was only ever worn by the Princess, and following her death, it was never seen in public again until now. Princess Diana had a long-standing relationship with Garrard, having selected her engagement ring from them in 1981. Over the years she would collaborate with Garrard and wear pieces from the illustrious jewellery house on many occasions.

The cross-shaped pendant is a bold, vibrant piece set with square-cut amethysts and accented by circular-cut diamonds. Competed for by four bidders, the Cross ultimately landed in the hands of a representative for Ms. Kardashian, in the last five minutes of the auction, for £163,800 / $197,453.
