Looking towards a green future, Gucci opens new LEED certified store in Manhattan

New York City’s gritty and glamorous Meatpacking district is now home to Gucci’s luxury retail store.

Stepping up its environmental commitment, fashion giant Gucci opened a new gleaming store on the corner of W 14th Street and 9th Avenue in New York City’s Meatpacking District.

Surrounded by the glitz and glamor of the city, the new store embodies Gucci’s efforts to adopt greener choices within its retail spaces. Not to mention Gucci is the first luxury brand to have more than 110 LEED certified stores, setting itself as a significant precedent for others to follow.

The 9,000 square feet retail space is inspired by two iconic cities of Gucci’s 102-year history – New York and Florence. Grid-patterned metal mesh ceilings reflect the industrial character and fast paced life of the neighborhood while painted cement flooring is drawn from historic Florentine marble motifs.

Turning the store into a space where the past meets the future, the designs bring back the 1970s-inspired aesthetic through a functionalist and modular approach. The mood is beautifully encapsulated with stylish décor injected with pops of colors, mirrored surfaces and vintage furniture.

In a bold nod to the decade, the walls are upholstered with verdant green carpeting. The interior designs also opt for sustainable furnishings, including restored second-hand pieces and surfaces decorated with more environmentally friendly fabrics and materials like Demetra. Lastly, paying homage to the brand’s heritage, two fitting rooms have been decorated with upcycled archival fabrics from the house’s past collections: a maxi white and purple houndstooth pattern for one and a geometric design in rusty orange tones for the other.

In a first ever, Gucci Meatpacking will include an exclusive physical presence of Vault’s Gucci Continuum – the initiative that revives past Gucci pieces and deadstock fabrics by inviting brands, artists, and makers to incorporate them into their own future designs, thereby reducing waste and encouraging circularity through a harmonious relationship between creativity and conscious production.
