Arnold & Son 1764 unveils Perpetual Moon Obsidian

Using Mexican obsidian and red gold, the watch radiates warmth in its design

Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon Obsidian

December 2, 2020: Swiss watchmaker Arnold & Son has launched the Perpetual Moon Obsidian watch, a limited edition of 28 pieces, with a dial made from the extraordinary material – golden obsidian – which was obtained from Mexico. Coupled with the large rhodium-plated moon, the 42mm red gold case and the perfectly polished hour-markers, the watch is an interplay of reflections, vibrations and warmth that echoes the light of Earth’s satellite.

The golden obsidian, a volcanic stone, was mined in Mexico and used in the religious ceremonies of pre Columbian civilisation. The golden Obsidian shimmers because of high silica content and its specific crystallisation. Even though a minute amount was used for the dial, it still produces a glistening effect, reflected in turn in the hands and hour markers.

Arnold & Sons selected cool shades to contrast with the stone. The moon and hands are rhodium plated and the hour markers are made from diamond polished white gold. Reflecting a contrasting interplay of warm and cool tones, the brand chose a blue alligator leather strap with visible silver coloured topstitching.

The watch is supposed to be accurate for 122 years before deviating from the actual lunar cycle by one day. The 90 hour power reserve testifies the ingenuity and expertise of Arnold & Sons.
