May 10, 2021: India had just begun to rise from the ashes of the last pandemic wave, when it got swept under a second, even more tragic wave of COVID-19. In these unprecedented times, art has been the last priority in a world struggling just to breathe. This, in turn, has adversely affected the makers of art who are now threatened with extinction if not supported.
With this aim in mind, Baro Market and Peepul (a communication consulting firm) have launched an SOS fundraising effort called Chitrakar Relief Sale. Srila Chatterjee – Founder, Baro Market, has identified 10 artists from across the country and representing centuries-old arts legacies who need our assistance.
The 10 masters, not only support their own families, but also students who represent the next generation of their art-forms. The online sale has been devised to provide some relief to both, the artists, and their communities. Sales of all artworks will be paid directly to the artists, with no deductions.
From terracotta and pinch pottery to Pattachitra and Gadwakam, the selected artists and art pieces represent the length and breadth of India’s indigenous creativity.
The sale will begin on May 13 and can be accessed on the Baro Market website.
