Following the recent exit of Creative Director Matthew M. Williams, Givenchy sought inspiration from its past collections and turned to its founder to create the Fall/Winter 2024 menswear collection.
The show was presented at the historic salons on Avenue George V in Paris, where founder Hubert de Givenchy crafted his designs from the late 1950s until his retirement in 1995. The brilliance and flamboyance of the creative force was unmistakable in the collection.
The return to the roots of the brand was evident given the reappearance of the infinity G monogram and the 2G emblem. Hubert de Givenchy’s iconic ‘work uniform,’ the impeccable blouse blanche he consistently wore in his studio, made a comeback in the show, followed by a series of suits and coats.
Fashioned in the Givenchy haute couture ateliers, the garments feature armholes reminiscent of the founder’s affection for capes. The new gentleman’s wardrobe delves into the couturier’s demeanor and vision, both in the public eye and on a personal level. Each piece radiates a unique Parisian elegance, contributing depth to the character of the Givenchy gentleman.
Inspired by eccentric motifs from the archives, favored by the founder himself, the collection breathes new life into graphic elements. Chandelier motifs, embroidered with pearls on white pants, and scarves adorned with plaited hair prints exude a contemporary éclat, presenting a modern interpretation of the brand’s rich heritage.
Military influences take center stage, with wool, leather, and ponyskin flight jackets exploring the realm of timeless staples.
The line of accessories sees the couturier’s signet ring, long necklaces bedecking the back, and a revival of the iconic 2G emblem on belt buckles. Elegantly comfortable footwear steals the spotlight with loafers, mules, and derbys, complementing the refined aesthetic.
The collection also added a refreshing touch to classic dandy sunglasses, infusing them with vibrancy through tinted lenses or in mask frames.
Givenchy’s Fall/Winter 2024 menswear collection masterfully navigates the delicate balance between tradition and innovation, offering a captivating narrative of the brand’s influence in the world of high fashion.
