Prinseps is offering two auctions sales featuring collectibles of artist and Oscar-winning costume designer Bhanu Athaiya and legendary Bengali artist Atul Bose
September 19, 2020: Prinseps, the Indian online auction platform, is set to open the culture season with a strong note. There will be two auctions sales along with fixed price sales at the luxury online gallery featuring a range of luxury items across jewellery, carpets, Art Deco furniture, objet d’art and property, with prices ranging from INR 10,000 to 10 crores.
The two separate online auctions will have rare estates from renowned artist and Oscar-winning costume designer Bhanu Athaiya and famed Bengali artist Atul Bose. The auctions will be accompanied by introductory catalogue essays by India’s leading scholars and art historians - Ranjit Hoskote, writing on Bhanu Athaiya and Partha Mittar, writing on Atul Bose.
The Bhanu Athaiya sale features remarkable artworks which will be coming to auction for the first time in almost 70 years, including Prayers, which was first exhibited in the 1953 group show of the Progressive Artists Group, where Athaiya was the only woman artist among the Progressives. Known as India’s premier costume designer, she is best known for her work on Richard Attenborough’s iconic film Gandhi which won her an Academy Award.
The sale of works by Atul Bose – an artist contemporary of Jamini Roy and Hemen Majumdar - will include lots that have never been offered in over 50 years to the market. A prolific landscape and portrait artist, Bose’s paintings find prized place in prestigious collections such as that of the Rashtrapti Bhavan in New Delhi.
The online luxury gallery fixed price sales has high-end collectibles like the Laver Kerman “Tree of Life” carpet from 1920 or the spotlight stealer 16ct antique cushion cut Burmese Ruby priced at a whooping INR 56 lakhs.
Speaking about the upcoming calendar and the auction market during these difficult times, Indrajit Chaterjee, Founder of Prinseps, notes, “There is a belief that a purely online auction may not be that vibrant, however we believe the works in the two upcoming auctions will see both collector and museum interest - these are rare first time to market works from artists who are important contributors to both modernism and the art movement in India.
