Valentino’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection for men seeks to challenge stereotypical masculine codes prevalent in society.
June 27, 2023: Breaking boundaries once again, Valentino unveiled their modern interpretation of masculine fashion, called The Narratives. The Spring Summer 2024 menswear collection by creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli seamlessly explores the possibilities for the creation of soft and supple masculine garments. He was influenced by Hanya Yanagihara’s best-selling novel, A Little Life, which is about four boys dealing with different phases of life.
From flowy fabrics to floral prints, every piece symbolizes life and the power it holds. Flowers have come to represent both power and tenderness and are emblazoned on almost every kind of attire.
Lending freshness and vibrancy, blazers are paired with easygoing shorts, while traditional workwear pieces are given a delicate touch with shapes that are discreetly modified.
Breaking away from the traditional materials, pure cotton (drill, popeline, and cotton double) was amplified. Through the collection, Mr. Piccioli showcased the power and strength of fragility and imperfection.
As Ms. Yanagihara said in her novel, "We are so old, we have become young again.", the collection also strives to look back at the past, all the while reinterpreting the masculine codes and provoking a gentle change.
The colour palette crosses an entire spectrum from vivid red to calming green. Flowers feature as prints or like origami where the fabric is moulded to create a flower. Quotes from A Little Life feature across some of the apparel.
Befitting the first standalone menswear collection, the show was presented in Milan, where Valentino Garavani staged the first Valentino menswear show in 1985.
