Lake Maggiore: Italy’s Most Smoothing & Charming Lake

Lakes have a way of calling out to people. Italy’s Lake Maggiore is no different, as it witnesses an increasing interest from investors

By: Lodovico Pignatti Morano, Managing Partner, Italy Sotheby’s International Realty

Lake Maggiore Italy

The Lake Maggiore area, with the second largest lake in Italy at its epicentre, boasts a mild climate year-round and serves as a fantastic base for those looking to explore the archipelago of the Borromean Islands such as Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori, or the formidable castles in the surrounding area.

Lake Maggiore sits at the northern tip up near the Swiss border and measures 65 km. The name, which, translates to ‘Greater lake’ is the divider between Lombardy to the East and Piedmont to the West.

As a destination popular with both domestic and international buyers, the area has seen a significant uptick in popularity following the coronavirus pandemic, due to its abundance of properties with green, open spaces, which allow for the positive benefits of interacting with nature in relaxing scenery. Interestingly, requests from Italians looking for property on Lake Maggiore rose by 20% and rental enquires rose by 70%. Italians in larger and more condensed cities are looking towards Lake Maggiore for their own piece of domestic serenity in light of the recent pandemic.

As a result of this increased interest, Italy Sotheby’s International Realty decided to open an office in Lake Maggiore and are confident that the area will continue to attract more buyers and holiday makers alike.

Lake Maggiore has always been a popular location for holiday goers and despite the name, there is much more to do in Lake Maggiore than just visiting the large Italian lake it is named after. But of course, it is the lake that will be the main attraction. It has something for everyone, whether that be a simple stroll or more sporty activities like boat rides of water skiing. The lake also has a number of beaches that are perfect to tan on during the warmer months of the year. Outside of the lakes, there is still plenty to do.

The surrounding area boasts more than 300 square kilometres of protected natural parks and gardens. Keen nature lovers will find a number of stunning gardens on offer, from the Isola Bella Gardens, which is the perfect example an Italian baroque style garden, to the Isola Madre gardens which host a number of exotic flowers, birds and plants.

Art and history buffs will be pleased to know that Lake Maggiore boasts a number of historic buildings. On the Borromee Islands you’ll find the 17th century residence of the historic Borromeo family, while up on the hilltops is the castle Rocca Borromeo di Angera which dates back to before the 13th century.

Anyone interested in more historic residential homes should see this villa, built in the first years of the 20th century. Also offering amazing lake views, the home is surrounded by beautiful parks full of camellias, azaleas and roses – making it an ideal area to go for a stroll.
