August 9, 2012: Internationally renowned South-East Asian brand, Royal Selangor, now has a retail presence in India. Royal Selangor, the world’s largest pewter maker, recently made its debut in India with two new stores in Mumbai. The first one being located at Juhu Tara road, one of Mumbai’s most affluent areas, while the second one is at Palladium Mall.
Executive Director of Royal Selangor Marketing, Chen Tien Yue, said “India is an exciting opportunity for us because of the size of the affluent population and the strong gifting culture. We see a long term potential in the Indian market.” Royal Selangor has an exclusive distribution agreement with Selangor Retail Pvt Ltd for India.
“Royal Selangor has a long heritage in design and craftsmanship. We believe the Indian consumer will appreciate these values and their depth of products in home and living, wine and dine, and children’s gifts” said Sunil Biyani of Selangor Retail Pvt Ltd.
Many Indians already know Royal Selangor from their frequent travels abroad, especially to the UK, Malaysia or Singapore. “In the last 12 months alone, about 10,000 Indians visited the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre in Kuala Lumpur. We already have some idea about the Indian consumer’s sense of taste. Furthermore, our team of designers are based in Malaysia. Chinese culture was not too foreign for us when we entered China in the 1990s. Neither is Indian culture, given our multicultural society here,” said Chen. Nevertheless, Royal Selangor aimed to develop its understanding of this market by sending a team of designers to India in May for a creative study tour.
Royal Selangor is distributed in over 20 countries and is available at stores such as Harrods, John Lewis and Selfridges. It also has retail stores in Malaysia, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Australia and UK.
