Saffronart’s Summer Online Auction showcases major artworks by contemporary South Asian artists

Gear up for Saffronart’s Summer Online Auction 2024. Scheduled for June 26-27, this virtual event will showcase a collection of 130 lots, featuring masterpieces by renowned modern and contemporary South Asian artists. From vibrant canvases to captivating sculptures, the catalog boasts a diverse selection for every art enthusiast.

It will feature a dazzling collection of contemporary art with significant works by luminaries like Gulam Mohammed Sheikh, Nalini Malani, Arpita Singh, and Subodh Gupta. These treasures, hailing from esteemed private collections across India and beyond, offer a rare glimpse into the rich tapestry of South Asian artistic heritage.

The auction celebrates F.N. Souza’s birth centenary with a collection showcasing his iconic ‘heads’ and landscapes. Notable among these is Red Landscape, 1989, which highlights Mr. Souza’s mastery in form and space, commanding an estimated value of Rs 4 – 6 crores. The piece is composed of vigorous, bold brushstrokes that skillfully juxtapose nature and urban landscapes.

Another standout piece is Untitled (Head of a Man), 1957 (INR 16,60,000 – 24,90,000), exemplifying Mr. Souza’s signature style and serving as a medium for his biting social critique on human nature.

One of the highlights is S.H. Raza’s captivating masterpiece, Untitled (Village), 1956 (INR 3.32 – 4.98 crores). It showcases the picturesque landscape of Southern France. Here, homes delicately perch on hills, seemingly rising from the sea, reflecting Mr. Raza’s quest for artistic innovation during his time in France.

One of the most unique pieces is M.F. Husain’s monumental canvas Untitled (Village Scenes), 1958, valued at INR 4.15 – 5.81 crores. It captures his fascination with rural Indian life.

Also featured are Akbar Padamsee’s 2007 metascape, Mr. Raza’s 1979 Untitled piece, Arpita Singh’s 1999 Untitled artwork, and Mr. Husain’s Gaja Gamini, 1999, offering collectors a unique opportunity to acquire works by renowned artists spanning different styles and periods.
