The Bengal Narrative brings Calcutta’s history to modern rugs

Optical illusions and traditional motifs shape this unique rug collection, created in collaboration between Cocoon Fine Rugs and designer Ajay Arya.

Designer and architect Ajay Arya, in collaboration with Cocoon Fine Rugs, has introduced ‘The Bengal Narrative’, a new collection of handcrafted rugs that merges historical influences with modern craftsmanship. The collection pays tribute to Bengal’s architectural grandeur, drawing inspiration from heritage structures in Calcutta.

The collection incorporates design elements from aristocratic Zamindari mansions, Victorian elegance, and Rajbari stained glass. Inspired by early flooring patterns, each striking rug features intricate geometric motifs, using interlocking rectangles to create depth and optical illusions that reflect Bengal’s artistic evolution.

The collection features three distinct design styles, each reflecting a different aspect of Bengal’s artistic heritage. The Bengal Heritage Style carpet, designed in a square format, draws from colonial-era flooring patterns. The Shantiniketan Style rugs highlight indigenous craftsmanship with bold colors, while the Jamdani Style rugs emphasize Bengal’s weaving traditions through arabesques, floral medallions, and geometric tessellations.

Each rug, handcrafted by artisans working to preserve Bengal’s artistic traditions, is capable of standing alone as an art piece on your floor, or your wall. By reinterpreting Calcutta’s design history for contemporary interiors, these rugs bring the past aesthetically into modern living spaces.
