Today, China is celebrating the Qixi festival, also popularly known as Chinese Valentine’s Day. Since the Han Dynasty, 2,600 years ago, the Qixi festival has been celebrated originating from a story about two star-crossed lovers, the weaver and the cowherd. Only on this day does a bridge formed by magpies allow them to embrace. This magical, mythical love story has been embraced not only by the young people of China, but also global luxury brands now, who want a part of Chinese heritage in their legacy. After Chinese New Year, therefore, brands are attempting to provide the perfect gift for expressing love on this day.
American lifestyle brand Michael Kors has already unveiled their items in preparation for the festival. Mr. Kors recognizes the festival with two special-edition Whitney handbags in collaboration with actress and brand ambassador Yang Mi. With its features of heart- and star-shaped silver-tone embellishments and black and red leather bags, they nod graciously at the meaning of Qixi.
Michael Kors is not the only brand to pay homage to this festival. British luxury brand Burberry also released its’ limited edition red “Belt Bag” and “Pin Clutch,” sold exclusively in China on the social platforms WeChat and Weibo. The French Louis Vuitton has created the Capucines BB in pink Taurillon leather, adorned with a crown of red enamel Monogram flowers on the top of the bag, being the perfect romance statement piece to woo a significant other.
And the Italian watch and jewelry brand Bvlgari’s Divas’ Dream series relinquishes an eye-catching, almost translucent, fiery red piece encrusted with diamonds hanging from a gold chain. It almost looks like a Santa hat. Bvlgari also released multiple bags featuring texturized, pattern bags all in red, a few stamped with a beautiful butterfly. On top of these, there was also a pink bag and a white bag with an original snake closure, and a heart popsicle pendant.
Dior’s Dioramour collection pops with colourful, fun and funky pieces. Valentino made a myriad of accessories for the occasion including shoes, a bracelet, keychain, wallet, and clutch purse featuring red studs and “Be my VLTN” in a cursive flourish.
Whether a gift of love to yourself, or a stunning display of affection for your loved one, these most notable pieces will surely not disappoint. All these collections are tasteful, romantic and functional. After the skyrocketing sales on Western Valentine’s Day, it is time to give a nod to the Chinese love festival. Nothing like love to make the world go round. And fashionably luxurious!
