British pop singer Charli XCX’s album brat – released on June 7 – has legions of fans embracing the theme and Brat style “slime-green” this summer. So, when she recently tweeted “kamala IS brat,” American vice-president Kamala Harris’ team took note — and turned the backdrop of her official Presidential campaign Twitter page (@kamalahq) to brat green.
According to BBC NEWS: “Brat is the name of Charli’s sixth studio album and her tweet about Vice-President Harris received almost nine million views in just four hours.”
The internet has since exploded with memes, videos and fashion choices in ‘brat’ green. But what exactly is the meaning behind brat? Charli took to TikTok to explain things to those of us desperately trying to wrap our heads around the idea: “just like that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes, who feels herself, but then also maybe has a breakdown, but kind of parties through it, is very honest…a little bit volatile.”
“It’s serendipitous that ‘brat summer’ overlaps with August’s peridot birthstone, although I’ve seen the trend towards bold lemon/lime shades for most of the year,” says Randi Molofsky, founder of Future Reference (FFR), a New York and Los Angeles-based brand development agency. “Besides peridot, highlighter-coloured chalcedony has been popping up, demantoid garnets are a forever favourite and neon chrysoberyls have been rising in popularity. The takeaway? Eye-catching chartreuse is the color of the moment.”
