June 29, 2021: “How you see things – and from where you see them – has never been more important,” says Silvia Venturini Fendi, Artistic Director of Fendi Accessories and Menswear. Taking inspiration from the sweeping 360° vistas towards the seven hills of Rome, the Apennine mountains, and glimpses of the Mediterranean Sea from the Fendi headquarters inside the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, this collection is light, airy and fluid.
The Fendi Men's Spring/Summer 2022 collection is a rich combination of delicacy and ease with a laser sharp emphasis on the future of luxury. Pastel images of lemon and lime, ice blue, lavender, pistachio, and peony contrast with mineral colors of travertine, chalk, graphite, and slate in a subtle palette that evokes spring flora.
Roman hinterlands inspire prints, shapes, and craftsmanship. Abstract contoured motifs float across linen silk suiting, jacquard denim, plush crochet tees, and intarsia shearling in the Fendi Earth collection.
Peak lapel linen blazers are laced with pen pockets and EarPods compartments. Abbreviated wool jackets, cropped at the torso, seem to be a satirical take on ‘work from home’. Pockets drop beneath hemlines and jackets unbutton down the hips, while multi-pocket city shorts and straight trousers split at the ankle.
Vented trench coats, spacious windcheaters, and overshirts are accentuated by ‘Selleria’ stitching and embossed embellishments on reversible suede, calfskin, and sustainable garment-dyed cotton. Shirting in crisp poplin or light woven cashmere incorporates fabric buttons for an all-over monotone tonality, which is broken up by a mosaic of mismatched jacquard collars and striped cotton sleeves.
Knits in lightweight cashmere intarsia and zipped two-tone double cashmere, as well as polo tops in ribbed or crochet cotton, follow the precise contours of the Fendi Earth patterns.
The accessories collection is a fun diversion from reality. In collaboration with ARENA, swimming goggles and caps join ping-pong racket bags as satirical summer necessity, while the Baguette is shrunk into a jewelry pouch on a fine waist chain. The Peekaboo comes in matte nylon with burnished edges or Selleria macro stitching, while the Baguette is available as a spacious messenger bag or a Perspex clutch.
The new Fendiness utility buckle appears on a variety of nylon webbing backpacks and crossbody styles, while new luggage forms in canvas and printed FF logo mesh incorporate a bonded convex profile for a ‘fisheye' look.
Buckled sandals join a monochromatic slip-on knit sneaker with injected appliqué accents in a pastel palette. Flatform wicker double strap sandals with plush accents or Selleria stitching complement soft suede desert boots with FF logo buckles.
“Our singular point of view in this period has modified our perception of the world – and mine has become so linked to what I see from the arches and the rooftop of our building. It is almost like a bird’s eye view of Rome from here. The colours and the perspective are always changing – the soft palette of the Roman sky across the day is so beautiful and I wanted it to be a focal point of this collection,” explains Ms. Fendi.
