Anantara Spa, Lisbon – A Sanctuary for Holistic Wellbeing

The exceptional Anantara Spa is an outstanding Balinese-style spa offering relaxing, unique restorative treatments. It is set in Portugal’s statuesque Tivoli Avenida Liberdade hotel, next to the historic St. Jorge’s castle, beside the idyllic river Tagus, in the wild and wonderful city of Lisbon

Part of the prestigious Leading Hotel of the World group, the Tivoli Hotels (founded in 1933) take pride in being Lisbon’s foremost luxury hotel chain. Royalty, dignitaries and Hollywood A-listers regularly grace the Tivoli doors, many returning year after year, and it’s easy to see why. On entering the imposing property, the first thing that hits you, aside from the delicious aroma emanating from the Cervejaria Liberdade restaurant, is the buoyant and welcoming ambience of the glorious lobby.

Situated in the basement of the restored property are the Anantara Spa suites. Anantara means “Endless” in Sanskrit, and the Spa endeavours to give you an endless experience of relaxation, tranquillity and equanimity. Retaining the turquoise, gold and mahogany décor of the hotel, the Spa section embraces a calm and serene quality in its ambience. Each room is styled in natural wood, glass and stone, creating a peaceful mood in contrast to the bustling city.

The Spa has six low-lit treatment rooms, each featuring a dressing area, treatment area and steam room, as well as individual music systems. At the Spa hub there is a beautiful pool fringed with day beds for pre- and post-treatment lounging along with an aromatic steam room.

But of course, I was there for more than just a look at this private sanctuary. I opted for their Signature Treatment from Thailand. A 60 minute massage using a blend of oils, combined with purpose-designed movements, stimulating blood circulation and promoting deep relaxation, the spa treatment restores the flow of energy along the meridian lines.

It is recommended for deep-seated muscular pain, detoxification and re-energising – all of which we need in today’s lifestyle. All treatments commence with the renowned Aman foot ritual to encourage immediate relaxation. My session commenced with a foot scrub using an orange peel and an application of the grape seed oil for nourishment and hydration.

This was followed by assisted stretching and pulling techniques to loosen and stretch my stiff muscles. My therapist (who was truly incredible) then performed a shiatsu pressure point body massage combined with reflexology. The aromatherapy full body massage using herbal heat compressors infused with citrus oils released deep seated muscle tension. Completed with a face and scalp pressure point massage, I was left feeling rejuvenated thanks to complete body overhaul.

Anantara Spa Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Review

This was, without doubt, one of the best holistic experiences I’ve had – pure and utter bliss. After a thorough oil-induced stupor I was sent for a private steam followed by an invigorating shower.

From Caviar facials to seductive couple massages, Anantara’s Spa menu reads like the world’s secret therapy map. Indian Head Massage, Vichy Aqua Massage, Bamboo Stick Massage, Lomi Lomi Hawaiian Massage, Organic Coffee Bean Scrub – all of these are a part of Anantara’s list.

The Anantara Spa excels in combining ancient eastern rituals with indigenous Portuguese customs and therapies. One can use the sauna, fitness facilities and changing rooms with ease enjoying an impeccable blend of professional service, natural essences and a charming ambience. I got a piece of Thailand in Portugal.
