Handwritten notes, rare design features, and years of personal use make Jane Birkin’s Le Birkin Voyageur a once-in-a-generation collector’s treasure at Sotheby’s Abu Dhabi.

Bringing a rare Hermès to the table once again, Sotheby’s is set to auction Le Birkin Voyageur, a black Hermès Birkin personally owned, used, and inscribed by Jane Birkin, during the inaugural Abu Dhabi Collectors’ Week, presented in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO). The event will run from December 2 to 5 at the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, with the live auction scheduled for December 5. Estimated between $240,000 and $440,000, this one-of-a-kind Birkin offers an intimate glimpse into the artist and style icon’s life.

This is no ordinary Birkin. Gifted to Jane Birkin by Hermès in 2003, it became her daily companion for four years, traveling with her across continents and quietly collecting the marks of a life well-lived. Its nickname, Le Birkin Voyageur (“The Traveler”), comes from a handwritten message inside the bag: “Mon Birkin bag qui m’a accompagné dans le monde entier”,  which translates to “My Birkin bag, my globetrotting companion.”

The upcoming auction follows the July sale of Birkin’s original Hermès prototype, the very bag that ignited a fashion revolution, which sold for a record €8.6 million ($10.1 million) at Sotheby’s Paris. The sale not only marked the most valuable handbag ever sold at auction but also reignited global fascination with Birkin’s personal collection and the story behind the world’s most coveted accessory.

Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s Global Head of Handbags and Fashion, said, “To present not one, but two of Jane Birkin’s personal Hermès bags in a single year is nothing short of historic. Following the record-breaking sale of the original Birkin prototype in July, this exceptionally rare example offers collectors an intimate connection to the woman at the origin of the world’s most iconic handbag. This is not just a piece of fashion history, but a deeply personal artifact from a cultural and style icon whose legacy continues to inspire.”

Le Birkin Voyageur is crafted in classic black box leather and measures 40 cm in width. The bag includes a unique Hermès design feature — closed bridges to fasten it — a detail never offered to the public and reminiscent of the prototype Birkin she helped inspire. Its true value, however, lies within: silver-ink scrawls, sketches, and heartfelt words by Birkin herself. Phrases such as “My Birkin bag” and her signature “Jane B” appear alongside delicate doodles, including a modest nude and childlike faces, each mark reflecting her playful and personal connection to the piece.

First sold at auction in 2007 to benefit the Human Rights Association, the bag has since remained in a private collection. Its return to the market after more than 15 years offers collectors a rare opportunity to own one of the five handbags that together define Jane Birkin’s handbag legacy, a body of work as personal as her music and activism.

Following July’s record-breaking sale, Hermès sales on Sotheby’s Buy Now platform surged by 48% in volume and 94% in value, while “Birkin” became the fifth most searched term on Sotheby’s website. Since 2021, the auction house has sold nearly $100 million worth of Birkin handbags, strengthening its foothold in the market for what it calls “ultra handbags”, rare, highly sought-after designs that bridge the gap between fashion and cultural history.

Yet Le Birkin Voyageur is far from the polished perfection often associated with luxury. It carries the creases, ink marks, and weight of a life authentically lived,  a reminder of the woman who made imperfection feel effortlessly modern. For collectors, it isn’t just another handbag. It’s a part of Jane Birkin’s story, one written in her own hand, and carried across the world.
