Developed in official collaboration with the Palace of Versailles, these creations celebrate the palace’s architecture, artistry, and history while offering collectors a tangible connection to one of the world’s most iconic landmarks.

The High Artistry series elevates pens and watches into objects of artistic expression, with Montblanc’s Artisan Atelier in Hamburg applying rare métiers d’art to explore cultural and historical milestones. A Journey Through Château de Versailles is the first installment in the High Artistry Grandeur series, honoring monumental human achievements, including palaces and historical events.

Versailles, initially designed as a hunting lodge by King Louis XIII in 1623, became a symbol of royal power under King Louis XIV. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its Hall of Mirrors, 2,300 elaborately decorated rooms, and expansive gardens. Its Baroque design, artistic achievements, and enduring elegance continue to inspire designers, artists, and collectors worldwide.

Montblanc’s artisans have translated the Sun King’s influence into each pen. Shapes and details reference Louis XIV’s personal monogram, ‘le Chiffre du Roi’, while motifs such as the sun and Apollo symbolize his reign. Each edition also nods to historical moments in writing, including the 1707 ‘endless pen’ by Nicolas Bion, an early precursor to the modern fountain pen.

The collection includes five limited edition writing instruments, each reflecting a different facet of Versailles. Limited Edition 479 evokes the King’s Corner Room in Louis XV’s private apartments. Its white translucent lacquered body mirrors the room’s walls, enhanced with Au 750 yellow gold and platinum-coated fittings. The solid gold nib features the letters ‘VV’ and the royal crown, while the limitation of 479 references Louis XIV himself through the Grand Chiffre system.

Limited Edition 195 celebrates the Orangerie of Versailles, combining a green aventurine underlay with an intricate skeleton overlay in solid Au 750 gold. A red garnet cabochon forms the center, surrounded by flower engravings, while the clip depicts Apollo’s head encircled by sun rays. The cone pattern is inspired by the vases in the orangery, and the nib depicts one of the historical planting pots. The edition’s limitation of 195 stands for ‘honour’, reflecting a core principle of the royal court.

Limited Edition 18 highlights Versailles’ marble heritage through detailed mosaic inlays. The barrel and cap feature different types of marble, framed in solid gold and accented with diamonds. A hidden compartment under the Montblanc emblem carries the king’s cipher numbers 070 and 479, adding an element of exclusivity and historical reference. Apollo’s head motif completes the design, and the nib bears the royal crown and ‘VV’.

Limited Edition 7

Limited Edition 7 captures the grandeur of the Hall of Mirrors with solid Au 750 gold construction and silver-coated rock crystal inlays that evoke the mirrored chamber. Gold strips and diamonds frame the inlays, while the nib is engraved with a chandelier. The cap medallion opens to reveal a miniature painting of the Versailles gardens as they appeared before the Hall of Mirrors. Diamonds embellish the cap top and cone, reflecting the palace’s ornate aesthetic.

Limited Edition 3 reflects the palace gardens through faceted enamel inlays and miniature paintings by Van Cleef & Arpels. Each inlay is framed with gold strips, diamonds, and delicate floral motifs. The solid gold cone functions as a seal stamp and features Louis XIV’s double ‘L’ monogram, while the nib depicts the palace’s chandeliers. A hidden compartment in the cap can be customized with a personal cipher. Apollo’s image, surrounded by diamonds, finishes the design, blending artistry with functionality.

Following Versailles’ tradition of bespoke craftsmanship, Montblanc also offers a made-to-order program. Selected clients can personalize a piece based on Limited Edition 3, working with the Artisan Atelier in Hamburg to bring individual ideas to life. The collection connects contemporary collectors to the historical grandeur of the Sun King’s palace, offering pieces that are both functional and collectible.

Expanding the collection into haute horology, Montblanc unveils the Star Legacy Suspended Exo Tourbillon Château de Versailles, inspired by the legendary 1745 masquerade ball, Le Secret du Bal des Ifs. The ball, held for the wedding of the Dauphin Louis to Infanta Maria Theresa Raphael, brought together 1,500 costumed guests in the Hall of Mirrors. Louis XV, dressed as an enormous sculpted yew tree, mingled to flirt with Madame d’Etiolles, who would later become Marquise de Pompadour. The watch’s dial recreates the ball using marquetry, hand-engraving, champlevé enamel, 3D-modeling, and laser etching, while the patented Exo Tourbillon movement ensures precision timing.

The dial base is crafted from white gold and layered with black enamel and gold paillons to reflect candlelight in the Hall of Mirrors. Archways are recreated using Cacholong and Sarrancolin marble from the same quarry as Versailles’ original stone, while solid oak inlays replicate the parquet floor. Sapphire plates etched with chandeliers and costumed guests add depth, including hints of Louis XV hidden among the yew-tree costumes. The time-telling dial at 12 o’clock uses champlevé enamel, blue Roman numerals, and gold sun rays, framed by a laser-machined 3N-gold ring inspired by Versailles’ brass detailing.

The yellow gold 750/1000 case is hand-engraved with a laurel wreath and a narrative from François Lemoyne’s Salon de la Paix, showing Louis XV offering an olive branch to Europe, guided by Minerva and Mercury, evoking the peace symbolism of the Gates of Janus. The Exo Tourbillon Calibre MB M16.68 features a balance wheel above the cage, anchored by a single-arm bridge, and displays the mechanism as a running-second indicator, with hand-finished bridges visible through the caseback.

Montblanc has also included a musical box by Elie Bleu with a Reuge mechanism that plays Jean-Philippe Rameau’s music and Voltaire’s lyrics from the original Versailles celebration. The box rotates the watch as if dancing at the ball, featuring a miniature oak parquet floor, marble arches, and a laser-etched outer walnut depicting Cochin’s engraving of the Yew Tree Ball.

The Montblanc High Artistry A Journey Through Château de Versailles collection, including both the writing instruments and the Star Legacy Suspended Exo Tourbillon, is available at select Montblanc boutiques and online. The release celebrates the artistry, architecture, and history of Versailles while setting a new standard for craftsmanship, turning each creation into a collectible piece of cultural heritage.
