Notwithstanding it’s infectious charm or clinically proficient therapies, The Royal Spa is a class apart in almost every definition of the word. With staff who courteously chaperon you through all three levels and every chamber of the very large establishment, and a veneer that is as glossy as the fleet of Range Rovers parked in the hotel drive, the astounding 35,000 sq mtr is something out of a mythical fable – fit for royalty – as it is so aptly named.
Just 20 minutes from the posh Beirut Souk, Le Royal Hotel estate is on the edge of the Leisure Hills Complex, overlooking the Mediterranean. The sprawling property, which is a part of the Leading Hotels of the World's portfolio, is state-of-the-art perfection, with a magnificent indoor swimming pool, indoor and outdoor Jacuzzis, a sauna, mud bath, an authentic Turkish hammam, and a relaxing area to unwind after a rejuvenating treatment or a robust fitness session. This is not just somewhere to slink to for a soothing massage or cleansing facial (though they are available, of course). The emphasis is on physical healing at a deeper level.
The décor exhibits a crisply tranquil, tautly tailored, and handsomely masculine minimalism. With plenty of calming flora, clean lines and a pallid colour scheme, the spa essentially exudes a peaceful and soothing vibe. The second level affords the most striking view of the city, especially from the heated relaxation pool, the perfect place to prepare for, or extend the pleasures of a treatment.
After an extended tour of the entire Spa, I entered the dimly lit therapy room to see a smiling masseuse waiting for me with a set of soft robes and disposable footwear in hand. Soft classical music was playing with scented candles and rose petals framing each corner of the private massage room, giving it an almost mystical mood.
Since the treatment I opted for was the Candle Oil massage, I was ushered to a smaller cabinet that contained an assortment of the different wax 'flavours' I could try. I was spoilt for choice with options ranging from relaxing to muscle soothing, to even sensual and energising! Having had a long yet successful day of retail therapy – the masseuse recommended that I opt for “Energising”. It was enriched with an uplifting blend of pure peppermint, orange and lemongrass essential oils.
By lighting up the candle and letting it melt, the wax turned into an exquisite smelling fluid massage oil. The 90-minute therapy started with soothing yet firm movements along my spine to ease tension and relax the muscles. Deeply hydrating the skin, and creating the most tranquil and peaceful atmosphere, I glided into some restful slumber while the warm candle oil penetrated my skin through skilful strokes. In my zen state I could only wish for the magic to never end as every muscular fibre was being invigorated and revitalised.
After a transformative hour and a half, I was chaperoned to another set of suites, where I lounged in to treat myself with some delicious herbal tea. A jacuzzi bath later I felt truly transformed with some renewed energy levels. I’ve been to plenty of spas, ranging from laborious detoxing, to the more sublime, but the masterful way in which every comfort was catered to and the powerful treatment in itself, set The Royal Spa apart.
