Patek Philippe is bringing a rare horological milestone to Abu Dhabi this December, as a complete four-piece set of its Star Caliber 2000 is set to appear at auction for the first time. Sotheby’s, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, will present the collection during its inaugural Abu Dhabi Collectors’ Week on December 5, offering collectors an exceptional opportunity to acquire a historic timepiece that has remained largely unseen.
Developed to mark the turn of the millennium, the Star Caliber 2000 represents the culmination of seven years of intensive research and innovation by Patek Philippe. Ranked as the third most complicated Patek Philippe ever made, after the Caliber 89 and the Henry Graves Supercomplication, it has retained an aura of rarity even among seasoned collectors. Sotheby’s estimates the set to achieve in excess of $10 million, representing the second-highest pre-sale estimate for any watch at auction.

Patek Philippe’s history of supercomplications extends over 185 years. The Henry Graves Supercomplication, delivered in 1933 with 24 complications, remained unmatched for decades. The Caliber 89, introduced in 1989 with 33 complications and 1,728 components, set a new standard for mechanical watchmaking. As the year 2000 approached, Patek Philippe unveiled the Star Caliber 2000 with 21 complications and 1,118 components, focusing not only on complexity but also on functions that measure and reflect the passage of time in practical and astronomical terms.
The watch incorporates six patented innovations: a selective opening system for the covers, a Westminster chime that strikes two identical tones in immediate succession, a perpetual calendar-controlled running equation of time, sunrise and sunset indicators synchronized to the calendar, a rapid calendar corrector that advances all indicators by almost a month in a single push, and a celestial dial displaying the moon and stars with unprecedented detail. These innovations combine technical precision, user practicality, and aesthetic sophistication.
Four unique half-hunter cases were crafted by Jean-Pierre Hagmann in yellow, rose, and white gold, and platinum. Front and back covers were engraved by Christian Thibert with Renaissance-inspired motifs, enhancing both visual impact and the resonance of the chimes. Each watch displays its 21 complications across two faces: one dedicated to timekeeping, including local mean time, true solar time, sunrise and sunset, and the equation of time, and the other to a mobile sky chart showing stars and the moon framed by a golden ellipse.
Long hidden from public view, the complete set represents a rare moment of discovery in horology. Only one yellow gold example of the Star Caliber 2000 has appeared at auction previously, selling for $3.3 million in 2012. The December sale will be the first public offering of the four-piece set, including matching chains and its original presentation box. For collectors, it offers a unique chance to engage directly with a timepiece that blends technical innovation, artistic mastery, and historical significance in a way that has never been available on the market before.
