JJ Valaya, one of Indian couture’s most recognised names, is moving into handbags, a category that has historically defined the commercial backbone of global luxury labels far more than runway collections have.

The house has launched JJ Valaya Couture Accessories, its first dedicated handbag line, comprising 14 designs that carry forward the brand’s signature blend of craft and cultural storytelling. Valaya has always drawn from Mughal grandeur, Byzantine artistry, and European tailoring in his couture work, and the accessories line stays true to that same visual and material language.
Named after Valaya’s parents, The Raj & The Jagjit is the collection’s most personal piece. The larger Jagjit bag wraps around and houses the smaller Raj bag, a design that represents protection, love, and the bond between a parent and a child. Both pieces can be carried together or worn separately, offering a balance of sentiment and practicality.

“The Raj & The Jagjit bag is extremely personal to me. It is my way of honouring my parents and the values they gave me. The entire line has been designed to feel timeless — pieces that balance heritage craftsmanship with modern functionality, and that can be treasured for years to come,” Valaya said.
Practicality runs through the rest of the line as well. The Mini Flap Bag comes with a crossbody chain, a back patch pocket, and adjustable gusset detailing that makes it easy to style for both festive occasions and everyday wear, including modern bridal trousseaus. The Batua Belt Bag takes inspiration from the traditional Indian batua, a small drawstring pouch, and reimagines it as a modern waist or crossbody bag with a detachable chain, leather tassels, and crystal finishes, sitting at the intersection of heritage and contemporary accessory design.

The Oversized Clutch Bag draws from the rich patterns of Persian and Mughal carpets, made in velvet with detailed embroidery and beadwork, and finished with a sculpted brass charm set with semi-precious gemstones. A detachable strap lets it shift between clutch and sling formats without losing any of its impact.
Materials used across the collection include pre-dyed embroidered velvet, quilted nappa leather, and bespoke faux suede interiors, all paired with custom handcrafted brass hardware. Subtle references to Byzantine artistry run through the hardware and structural details, ensuring each piece functions not just as an accessory but as a wearable object of craft.

Valaya launched his label in 1990 and has long been regarded alongside designers like Tarun Tahiliani and Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla as one of the key figures who shaped Indian luxury fashion into the industry it is today. His work has been shown internationally, and the house has stayed committed to a couture-first approach through decades of change. In global luxury, handbags and accessories consistently generate more revenue than clothing, with major groups like LVMH and Kering reporting them as their strongest performing category every year. JJ Valaya Couture Accessories enters that space with a 14-piece line, positioned at the couture end of the market and backed by the craft traditions the house has spent over 30 years developing.
