A recent entry in Bengaluru’s burgeoning restaurant space, Bastian Garden City can whip up some mean desserts.

Wedged in a small lane in the upmarket St. Mark’s Road in Bengaluru, Bastian Garden City is the third outlet from Mumbai’s much-loved celebrity restaurant chain (it is co-founded by actress Shilpa Shetty Kundra) that has outposts in Bandra and Dadar.

Monochrome musings

The first thing you will notice as soon as you are ushered in here is the large ceilings and how the entire space is swathed in hues of white, black, and beige. The interiors of this restaurant are the brainchild of Bastian’s founder Ranjit Bindra and interior designer Minal Chopra.

With the underlying theme of boho chic, the space is inspired from holiday destinations around the world. With its 350 covers spread over a massive 22,000 square feet, the restaurant has two levels and an alfresco seating area which is a silent nod to the city’s salubrious climate.

Nestled amidst a verdant green landscape, the property has been converted from a 60 year old home to a restaurant. Complete with ornate modern chandeliers, painted ceiling fans, and arched dining spaces, the bar area has a glass ceiling from where you can see the towering tree cover. There are artefacts that dot the walls in the same colour scheme as well.

Food files

The extensive menu has varied options – apart from the large cocktail and drinks menu (yes, they are separate), there is also a menu for brunch, one for dinner and one only for desserts. The respective chefs come up to the table to explain and share recommendations too.

With American and Asian-inspired dishes, the menu has a choice of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. We started the meal with Avocado Poke, a salad that combined the goodness of avocado, cucumber, onion, and sesame soy and was served with a rice cracker. Dip it in the avocado sauce that is smeared on the plate and you know this is the best way to start the meal. Another good choice is the Veg Taco that comes topped with sweet corn, mushroom, spinach, and jalapeño mayo that adds a dash of spice to the dish. Or if you prefer, try the Grilled Chicken Taco that has avocado mousse, pickled onions, cucumber noodles and red jalapeño salsa that teams well with the mild tacos.

Sea food rules the menu. The pan-seared snapper with caper lemon butter, kale, and cherry tomatoes is a good choice for its depth of flavours. The Spicy Crab Thermidor is for people who love their chillies – it is a pulled mud crab served with bechamel, herbed bread crumbs and white truffle oil.

There is a section dedicated to robata (fire cooking or grills), that has pork ribs, broccoli, baby potatoes, cauliflower, lamb chops and more. Add on the Burnt Garlic Fried Rice (that is served with or without egg) and use jasmine rice or the Malaysian Noodles that has bean sprouts, scallions, garlic, jalapeno, soy, mushroom, egg, and rice noodles to have a full meal.

Drinks & desserts

One of the big draws of the restaurant, however, is its extensive selection of drinks, cocktails and mocktails. Their clarified cocktails, that merge mixology and science, reveal interesting flavour profiles like the Naked Piña that has Bacardi añejo cuatro infused with roasted coconut, almond liqueur, pineapple, vanilla, and citrus. They also have twisted negroni cocktails, a modern interpretation of the classic negroni, like the Bella Negra that has tequila, sweet vermouth, coffee and rosemary infused Campari and chocolate bitter.

There are non-alcoholic drinks as well if you want to remain sober. Try the Coriander Smash, a drink that has coriander, lime juice, fresh pineapple juice and soda for a refreshing experience.

To end your meal on a sweet note, there is a crowd-pulling menu for desserts that includes pancakes, ice cream cakes and cheesecakes that the pastry chef can walk you through. I would recommend that you try the Lotus kunafa cheesecake that is made with a base of vanilla cheesecake, mix berry jam, crisp kataifi and has a Lotus glaze and Lotus crumble. The drama comes from Lotus Biscoff frozen in liquid nitrogen.

The Burnt crack cookie is for chocolate lovers with its melange of gooey dark chocolate cookie, burnt vanilla ice cream, and roasted hazelnut, putting you straight in chocolate heaven. If you are looking to celebrate a special occasion, head to Bastian as it merges chic décor with good food to make sure you have a good time.
