Iris Apfel was a true original, a trailblazer. She was a dynamic businesswoman, interior designer, and fashion innovator who refused to color within the lines. Alongside her husband Carl, she ran a successful textiles firm, even securing a contract with the White House that spanned nine presidencies.

In retirement, Ms. Apfel’s legacy blossomed further, thanks to a groundbreaking 2005 Costume Institute exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which showcased her eclectic mix of costume jewelry and bold outfits. She gained international acclaim as a fashion icon, with her unapologetic style becoming the subject of the 2014 Albert Maysles documentary Iris.

Auction house Christie’s has now announced Unapologetically Iris: The Collection of Iris Apfel, an online auction celebrating the unparalleled style and creativity of one of America’s most beloved fashion icons. Running from January 28 to February 13, this sale pays tribute to Ms. Apfel’s bold approach to fashion, accessories, and interior design that redefined the art of self-expression.

For nearly 50 years, Ms. Apfel captivated the world with her fearless use of color, texture, and pattern, blending couture with flea market finds to create a style entirely her own. Instantly recognizable by her oversized glasses, vibrant eyeshadow, and stacks of chunky bangles, she became a New York City legend and a global inspiration.

Unapologetically Iris brings together over 200 extraordinary pieces from her collection, offering a rare glimpse into the life and legacy of a trendsetter who lived boldly, dressed unapologetically, and left an indelible mark on the world of design.

The collection features everything from ready-to-wear pieces to couture garments dating from the 1950s to today. Notable highlights include a Dior Haute Couture Feather Coat (estimated at $800–$1,200), a vibrant Pink, Red, and Yellow Color Block Shirt Gown by Carolina Herrera ($800–$1,200), Carved Ostrich-form Bar ‘Gussy’ Italy, circa 1975 ($6,000-8,000), a cast-resin lime-green figure of Iris Apfel riding a scooter ($500-800), a Maltese with a red pom-pom collar oil on canvas, unlined ($500-800), and a set of 18 multicolored and patterned Iris Apfel x Zenni eyeglass frames ($400–$600).

Key pieces from the collection will be displayed in Florida at Christie’s Miami on January 24-25, and in Palm Beach at The Colony Hotel from January 29-31. The entire collection will be available for viewing at Christie’s New York from February 8-13.

With her passing on March 1, 2024, the world lost a creative force, but her larger-than-life legacy continues to inspire.
