Louis Vuitton launches its first aluminum suitcase – made by Marc Newson

Louis Vuitton is launching the Horizon Aluminum in 2026, the House’s first aluminum suitcase, marking 10 years of collaboration with industrial designer Marc Newson. It is the most technically demanding product to come out of that partnership.

Newson is widely considered the most celebrated industrial designer of his generation. His work covers furniture, aircraft, and consumer products, and his aluminum Lockheed Lounge chair has fetched incredible prices at auction. Louis Vuitton first brought him in to create a limited-edition rucksack in 2014 for the Monogram centenary, followed by the original Horizon suitcase in 2016, and since then an exclusive glass bottle for the House’s fragrances. The Horizon Aluminum is the next step in that collaboration.

Aluminum was Louis Vuitton’s material of choice for explorer trunks in the late 19th century. The House used it for durability when travelers needed luggage that could hold up in rough conditions. The Horizon Aluminum returns to that material, built with manufacturing processes that did not exist back then, including stamping, laser-cutting, and full-depth 3D moulding.

Every aluminum suitcase currently on the market uses rivets to hold the frame to the shell. The Horizon Aluminum has none, making it the first rivet-free aluminum suitcase available. Traditional rivets have been replaced by an ultra-thin frame system, and the shell is formed from a single-piece mould with no folding and no riveting.

Standard external hinges have also been replaced by concealed ones fitted inside the suitcase, functioning like a watch movement, precise and completely out of sight, taking up no additional interior space.

On most hard-shell suitcases, structural strength comes from grooves pressed into the surface. On the Horizon Aluminum, the Monogram pattern, embossed directly into the aluminum shell, does that job.

The shell is shaped through a series of stamping and laser-cutting processes, allowing aluminum sheets to take on the rounded curves that define the Horizon’s silhouette. The aluminum is also endlessly recyclable, making it a sustainable choice.

Inside, the lining is thermoformed flat, giving the main compartment more usable space than most comparable products. There are two retaining straps in the main compartment and a zipped pocket in the upper section.

The telescopic handle is extra-wide for a better grip. The wheels are larger than standard and made from a flexible material that absorbs shocks and cuts down on rolling noise. A high handle and a leather-covered side handle make it easy to carry by hand. VVN or black leather covers the corners and handles. A leather luggage tag doubles as a bag hook, so an extra bag can be secured on top of the suitcase. TSA-certified locks are built in for security checks, and a protective cover with openings for the wheels and handle is included for storage.

Repairs have been considered carefully. The interior lining can be removed in-store, giving technicians direct access to all internal components including the wheels. Leather elements can be restored or replaced. Most repairs can be handled at the store or a nearby regional workshop.

A matching Vanity Case comes with the same build, embossed aluminum, rivet-free frame, concealed hinges, and an ultra-slim TSA combination lock. Inside, it has a removable central divider with a zipped pocket, two small front pockets, and a patch pocket on the base. An elastic strap on the back lets it attach to the suitcase’s telescopic handle.

The Horizon Aluminum is available in the Horizon suitcase range alongside canvas and leather options, and can be personalized with colors and motifs from the House’s seasonal collections. It is priced at $4,700.
