With a nod to ancient Chinese heritage, Vacheron Constantin’s newest watch collection brings creative elegance to the forefront. The brand introduced a collection of four limited-edition timepieces, each featuring the “Seawater Cliff” motif.
This ancient symbol, which depicts the dramatic clash of waves against steep cliffs, dates back to the 14th century and serves as a homage to China’s last two imperial dynasties, spanning from the 14th to the early 20th centuries. The motif symbolizes the strength and resilience of nature, reflecting the grandeur of China’s historical legacy.
Each watch in this collection is meticulously encased in a 38 mm diameter case crafted from 18K pink or white gold, showcasing the luxury and precision that Vacheron Constantin is renowned for. These timepieces are powered by the Calibre 2460, a self-winding movement that drives the central hours and minutes hands.
With a 40-hour power reserve, the movement ensures reliability and performance, meeting the stringent criteria of the Hallmark of Geneva. This prestigious certification guarantees not only the origin but also the exceptional craftsmanship that goes into each watch. The 22K gold rotor, intricately engraved with a motif reminiscent of the waves and tides, exemplifies the seamless integration of mechanical engineering and artistic design.
The “Seawater Cliff” motif is brought to life using the ancient Jingtai Blue cloisonné enamel technique, which originated during the Ming Dynasty. This elaborate process required over 50 hours to lay 220 gold wires, which are meticulously shaped to form the intricate design. Following this, an additional 70 hours are dedicated to the enameling process, involving multiple layers and repeated kiln firings to achieve a vibrant, durable finish.
The final polish enhances the brilliance of the gold cloisonné, resulting in a dial that is not only a testament to traditional craftsmanship but also a masterpiece of modern watchmaking.
The second interpretation of the “Seawater Cliff” motif is equally captivating. Crafted in 18K white or pink gold, this variation features a detailed scene where the deep-blue Grand Feu enamel represents the sea, while raised diamond-set elements depict the towering mountains.
The creation of this motif involves over 50 hours of intricate work, including the layering of enamel, precise engraving, and the delicate setting of diamonds. Another section of the dial adds dimensionality by illustrating a mountain range being lashed by foaming waves, further enhancing the dramatic scene.
Each of the four watches in this collection is limited to just 15 pieces. Presented on an alligator leather strap with a gold folding clasp that matches the case, these timepieces are as much a symbol of luxury as they are a celebration of cultural heritage.
