De Beers Group introduces a groundbreaking Diamond Verification Device

Created to distinguish between natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds, this device claims to have a zero percent “false positive rate”.

De Beers Group has just unveiled an innovative verification device capable of rapidly distinguishing natural diamonds from lab-grown diamonds (LGDs) and diamond simulants. For the first time, this cutting-edge technology is available in select retail stores, allowing customers to firsthand identify between the two types of diamonds.

DiamondProof De Beers

With research indicating that nearly half of consumers are unaware that LGDs can be readily detected, DiamondProof serves as both a verification tool and an educational resource for retailers. By analyzing the distinct chemical compositions of natural diamonds, DiamondProof provides precise identification, ensuring no room for doubt in the verification process.

DiamondProof was first introduced as a prototype at the JCK show in Las Vegas in June 2024. Designed to screen both loose diamonds and those set in jewelry, the device boasts a zero percent false positive rate, meaning it will never incorrectly classify a lab-grown diamond as a natural diamond, or vice-versa. The results are delivered within seconds, offering an efficient and reliable solution for retailers and customers alike.

Early adopters include large jewelry retailers in the U.S., as well as select independent retail outlets, ensuring that a wide range of consumers have access to this technology. The first batch of DiamondProof devices has been distributed to retailers in the U.S., with after-sales support and servicing available within the country. Retailers can now purchase the device, with production scheduled to increase in the coming year to meet growing demand across international markets.

diamond testing

According to Morgan Stanley, lab-grown diamonds accounted for an estimated 14.3% of total diamond supply in 2023. The investment bank predicts that the market share of lab-grown diamonds will rise to 21.3%.

By bringing DiamondProof to retail spaces, this is a highly visible attempt by De Beers to not only provide a powerful verification tool, but also reinforce its commitment to preserve the integrity and demand of natural diamonds.
