Montblanc’s creativity has reached new heights with its latest ‘Masters of Art’ collection. The first edition of the collection pays tribute to the Dutch post-impressionist artist, Vincent van Gogh, with five limited edition writing instruments. The brand collaborated with the Van Gogh Museum, that houses over 200 paintings, 500 drawings and more than 700 letters, and each writing instrument takes inspiration from the golden ratio – 1.61 (Phi).
After the discontinuation of Montblanc Patron of Art, the new collection turns to the masters of the art, and will feature a variety of visual artists, covering different epochs like the Renaissance, the Baroque era, or the Impressionism period in its upcoming editions.
Vincent van Gogh’s swathing brushwork, striking use of celestial colors and his unique vision inspired the creation of this collection. Each pen pays homage to the various personal and artistic periods in the painter’s life.
The limited edition of 4810 celebrates the artist’s brightest time in Arles. His love for sun-drenched landscapes and bright color are captured in the pen with its barrel decorated in shades of yellow and orange. The signature ‘Vincent’ is engraved on the platinum-coated barrel ring and the engraving of ‘1888’ next to it commemorates the year he moved to Arles. The cap is made using hornbeam wood, reminiscing the artist’s admiration for Japonisme, a Japanese art form.
The limited edition 888 marks his life in Saint-Rémy, with an engraving ‘1889’ on the barrel ring. The engraving of ‘Saint-Rémy’ on the cap top of the writing instrument reveals the setting for the next stage of the painter’s personal journey.
The edition limited to 161 pieces captures the artist’s final years in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Auvers-sur-Oise with design details reflecting his last work, Tree Roots, among others. The Ag 925 sterling silver barrel is enhanced with lacquer inlays with design and colors from Tree Roots, which depicts a group of trees with their roots exposed by erosion on the side of a hill.
The highlight of the collection is an eight piece testament to the breath-taking blue skies and bold brushstrokes used in Van Gogh’s work ‘Wheatfield with Crows’. With the inspiration from Japanese Art appearing again, the solid Au 750 signature gold cap and barrel is adorned with brilliant diamonds and enhanced with swirling engravings that evoke the movements of Mr. van Gogh’s brush over the canvas.
The showstopper of the collection is the Vincent van Gogh Limited Edition 90. It is an unparalleled work that celebrates the artist’s unique impasto style and buoyant colors used in his painting during his time in Arles. The engraving of ‘Arles’ on the cap top emphasizes the importance of this place to Mr. van Gogh.
