Montblanc has built its Masters of Art line into one of luxury’s most recognised tributes to creative figures, and its latest release raises that standard considerably. Developed in partnership with Maison Matisse, the Homage to Henri Matisse collection spans five limited edition writing instruments, each tied to a specific painting, a specific period, and a specific idea from the French artist’s life and work.
Matisse’s work has been experiencing a strong cultural comeback in recent years, with major museums around the world dedicating large retrospectives to his legacy. His cut-out series from the early 1950s, made when he was largely bedridden, has drawn particular critical attention for its radical simplicity and bold use of colour. Brands like Guerlain have reinterpreted his art to offer unique products.
Montblanc, which has previously honoured figures like Dostoyevsky, Schiller and Donizetti through this line, has gone noticeably broader with this release, covering five editions that span Matisse’s paintings, sculptures, travels and decorative work. The collection also explores Matisse’s diverse body of work across painting, sculpture and paper cut-outs, reflecting his lifelong commitment to pushing the boundaries of artistic expression, from the vibrant canvases of Fauvism to the groundbreaking gouaches découpées of his final years.
Every pen in the collection takes its shape from Matisse’s sculptures, which were known for their flowing, natural forms and clean lines. The clip on each pen references his cut-out series, specifically a work called The Sheaf from 1953. Each writing instrument is also proportioned around the golden ratio, a mathematical principle found across centuries of art and architecture, and a consistent design reference across Montblanc’s entire Masters of Art line.
Starting with the most widely produced, the Limited Edition 4810 is capped at 4,810 fountain pens and 4,810 rollerballs, a number that matches Mont Blanc’s height in metres. It draws from Blue Nude III (1952), one of the most recognisable works from Matisse’s cut-out period.
Blue and white lacquer covers the barrel, and rotating it gradually reveals a seated female figure within the pattern, directly reflecting Matisse’s method of cutting painted paper into shapes and building figures from them. The blue and white lacquer is complemented by platinum-coated fittings, while the cap top features the Montblanc emblem in white precious resin set in blue precious resin. A rhodium-coated solid gold nib carries decorative references to his printmaking work alongside the intertwined initials “H” and “M.” The decorative pattern on the platinum-coated cone borrows a botanical motif, with elliptical shapes resembling flower petals, a recurring source of inspiration for Matisse throughout his career.
Inspired by The Romanian Blouse (1940), the Limited Edition 888 is rooted in Matisse’s long fascination with fabric, clothing and decorative patterns as tools of artistic expression. A bold red and blue colour palette runs across the cap and barrel, with textured lacquer deliberately designed to recall the look and feel of a painted canvas. Embroidered patterns from the blouse have been translated into black and red lacquer details on the barrel and refined engravings on the solid gold cone.
The Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl is set within black onyx and framed by a solid gold ring, while the cone is also crowned with black onyx, reinforcing the interplay between material richness and artistic reference. The solid gold nib is embossed with Matisse’s drawing Large Face (Mask) from 1952, honouring the purity of his line. Production is limited to 888 pieces, a number long associated with prosperity and harmony.
A more personal chapter from Matisse’s life shapes the Limited Edition 161. His trip to Tahiti in 1930 is widely regarded as a turning point, an experience that opened up his use of colour, light and natural pattern in ways that influenced the rest of his career. Works like Window in Tahiti came directly out of that journey. Partly blackened sterling silver makes up the cap, crafted to enhance depth, with a hand-engraved three-dimensional recreation of that painting capturing the trees and a boat as seen from Matisse’s hotel window in Papeete.
Cocobolo wood forms the barrel, featuring a geometric pattern taken from traditional tapa cloth that Matisse brought back from the South Seas. The solid gold rose gold cap top is crowned with the Montblanc emblem in iridescent paua shell, reminiscent of the ocean’s shifting light. A rose gold nib, partly rhodium-coated, carries the Greek letter Phi, the symbol of the golden ratio at 1.618, alongside design details from Polynesia, The Sky. Only 161 pieces will be made, a number chosen as a direct reference to that divine proportion.
Few works in Matisse’s career have had the lasting cultural impact of The Dance II, and the Limited Edition 96 takes it as its starting point. Vivid blue and turquoise lacquer is hand-applied across the cap and barrel, contrasted with bronze dancers who appear to encircle the pen in a continuous choreography. Delicate engravings accentuate the contours of the dancers’ bodies, making them appear more defined and alive. Solid gold rose gold fittings and rings, some featuring special engravings to create a sparkling effect, complete the design.
A turquoise stone sits at the cap top, framed in solid gold and contrasted with red jasper, a stone that reappears at the base of the cone. The solid gold nib is embossed with a decoration referencing Matisse’s lithographic work, alongside the intertwined initials “H” and “M.” Production is limited to 96 pieces, referencing 1896, the year Matisse first exhibited at the Salon des Beaux-Arts and announced himself to the broader art world.
At the top of the collection sits the Limited Edition 8, inspired by Purple Robe and Anemones (1937), a work that exemplifies Matisse’s devotion to decorative composition, vibrant colour and stylised form. Solid white gold forms the cap and barrel, covered in meticulously handcrafted enamel reinterpreting key elements of the painting, the flowing striped robe, the lush bouquet of anemones, and the ornate flower table depicted in the artwork, echoed further through intricate hand-finished three-dimensional engravings on the lower barrel and cone.
Green jade sits at the base of the cone, while red carnelian adorns the cap, crowned with the Montblanc emblem rendered in pavé-set diamonds on solid gold. Warm cognac-coloured diamonds encircle both the cap and the barrel, and the solid gold nib, set with a brilliant-cut diamond, features an embossing inspired by Matisse’s Large Face (Mask). Only eight of these exist in the world.
Completing the collection is a Notebook with a reproduction of Blue Nude III on its cover, along with an ink set in three colours, red, blue and green, each drawn from Matisse’s vibrant use of colour throughout his career.
Art-driven collaborations have grown steadily across the luxury sector over the past decade, with houses like Louis Vuitton, Cartier and Berluti all building stronger ties to the fine art world. Montblanc’s method in this collection is more granular than most, each edition connected not to Matisse’s style in general but to individual works, real biographical events and precise materials, placing these objects firmly in collectible territory. With editions ranging from 4,810 pieces down to just eight, the collection covers collectors across very different expectations of exclusivity.
